"Gulmohar" on OTT, Sharmila Tagore made her first appearance in front of the camera in 12 years. In 2010, the actress last appeared in "Break Ke Baad.“ Along with Amol Palekar making a lengthy cameo appearance, the movie also stars Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, and Suraj Sharma.

Nevertheless, the actress admitted in a recent interview that she had some reservations about portraying her character. She stated:, "[I felt] a little bit of apprehension, but the way they have dealt with it in the script is very subtle, not in your face. And I’ve been surprised, really. The audience has really accepted it. They’re okay with it. It’s not being underlined, underscored, or an in-your-face kind of statement. It’s kind of an internal evolution of a person. So it’s at that level." Talking about her character, she further stated, "It’s been her decision all the way, whatever the need of that time was. And her growth has been sort of powered by that. If you see the film, you realize what sort of a person she is. She is connected to everybody and she still prioritizes her own self. There’s nothing wrong in that. She’s 76 now, in the film. So now she wants to be free, basically."

Playing a lesbian role at this point in her life and career must be added to the list of preconceptions that Sharmila has defied as an actress. According to Sharmila, I can safely say that I've broken many stereotypes. I came alone, I wasn't chaperoned, when all the actresses were chaperoned. I stayed alone in a hotel and from there on, many things. Hence, I even admired my character Kusum and I found her clarity of thought really attractive."

In the Rahul V Chittella-directed film Gulmohar, Manoj Bajpayee, Simran, and Suraj Sharma are all featured. In the movie, Sharmila portrays Kusum, the widowed head of the Batra family who has a number of secrets to keep from her kids and grandkids. Before the house is sold off, the Batra's all assemble at the ancient family cottage for one final Holi. The actor claimed that although Kusum is there for everyone, she wants to live for herself as the other members of the family pursue their own interests. She also discussed the subliminal plot of Kusum's youthful encounter with a woman.
