Amritsar: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia has surrendered in a drugs case. He had got relief from the top court in the case till February 23. After completion of the relief, he has surrendered before the Mohali level court. The court remanded him in judicial custody till March 8.

In fact, while granting protection from punitive action, the Supreme Court had also directed Majithia to surrender in a lower court after the Punjab assembly elections were held on February 20. The bench had also directed the lower court to hear Majithia's regular bail plea after he surrendered and take a decision expeditiously. On January 31, the top court, while granting relief to Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a case related to the drugs case, had directed the Punjab Police not to arrest him till February 23 so that he could join the election process in the state.

The court had also said, "We are a democracy where politicians should be allowed to file nominations and there should not be an impression that cases have been filed 'motivated by malice'.''
