Punjab Congress chairman Navjot Singh Sidhu announced on Monday that if his party is elected to power, women homemakers will receive Rs 2,000 per month. Sidhu also offered homemakers eight free cooking gas cylinders every year.

The state Congress president also pledged two-wheelers to girls who enrol in colleges for further education, as well as Rs 20,000 to those who complete 12th grade, Rs 15,000 to those who complete 10th school, and Rs 5,000 to those who complete fifth grade.

Sidhu's promises nearly match those of Aam Aadmi Party national convenor and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who has pledged Rs 1,000 to all women in Punjab, as well as up to 300 units of free domestic power per month, if his party is elected in the poll-bound states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Goa. Sidhu made the statements at a gathering in the Barnala area of Punjab. Sidhu made the remarks while speaking at the rally, emphasising the importance of strengthening women in the state. "The Punjab government would provide Rs 2,000 per month to women homemakers and eight (LPG) cylinders for free," he said.

Sidhu announced his second commitment, saying that females who finish fifth grade, whether from rural or cities, will be paid Rs 5,000.  "Females who pass class 10th standard will be given Rs 15,000 as an incentive, while girls who pass 12th standard and aspire to proceed to colleges for advanced studies will be given Rs 20,000," he said.
