Kolkata: In a significant operation, the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police apprehended a railway employee for his involvement in drug trafficking from the northeastern states. The arrest led to the recovery of 9.081 kg of opium, estimated to be valued at around Rs 90 lakh.

The operation unfolded based on specific intelligence, prompting the STF team to set up surveillance near the Nasra High School in Nadia district on Thursday, March 28. The suspect, identified as Raju Mondal, a 39-year-old Group-D employee of the Railways, was promptly apprehended.

According to STF officials, Mondal was engaged in the illicit trade of prohibited substances from the northeastern states, facilitated through a courier company. A case has been registered under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at a local police station in Nadia district.

Investigations revealed Mondal's employment status as a Group-D staff member at Naihati station of the Indian Railways. Over the past few years, he had been actively involved in trafficking banned contraband via parcel couriers originating from the Northeast.

The arrest occurred after Mondal received a substantial quantity of opium from a DTDC courier counter near Nasra Post Office under the Ranaghat police station's jurisdiction. Despite attempting to evade capture by fleeing on his scooter, he was swiftly apprehended by the STF team.

As the investigation progresses, authorities aim to unravel all links associated with this illicit network. The seized contraband's estimated market value stands at nearly ₹90 lakh. Mondal is currently undergoing interrogation to dismantle the entire racket, shedding light on the magnitude of the illegal drug trade.
