JAKARTA: A powerful 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia's eastern province of Maluku on Friday, but no damage or injuries were reported at the time, the disaster officials said.

According to media reports, the country's meteorology, climatology, and geophysics service did not issue a tsunami warning because the jolts did not have the ability to cause enormous waves. The quake reportedly struck at 9.36 a.m., with the epicentre 85 kilometres southwest of Maluku Barat Daya district and a depth of 104 kilometres.  The shocks were also felt in East Nusa Tenggara, a nearby province, and Timor Leste, a neighbouring country.

The earthquakes created alarm among locals and were felt severely in some regions, according to senior officials in the quake-affected districts, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. They did say, however, that a risk assessment for the quake's effects was in the works.

"So far, no houses or buildings have been demolished, and no one has been injured," one official said. "However, the workers of the local disaster agency are continuing to assess the impact."
