Indian boxer Sumit Kundu (75kg) made a great start by defeating World Championship silver medallist Jhambulat Bijhamov of Russia in their opening bout of the tournament at the 73rd Strandzha Memorial in Sofia, Bulgaria, while three other Indian players suffered defeats in their first round.

Competing in his second international tournament at the senior level, defending national champion Sumit has also won an impressive 5-0 win over his opponent on Sunday. In the second round, he will face Oleksandr Khyzhniak of Ukraine.

Narendra Berwal (over 92kg), Varinder Singh (60kg) and Lakshya Chahar (86kg) have, however, lost in their opening rounds. Narendra has been beaten 3-2 by Ayub Gadda Drisi of Spain, while Varinder and Chahar lost to Russia's Artur Subhakhakulov and Sharbutdin Atev by a margin of 5-0 and 4-1 respectively.
