The Supreme Court on Monday gave the CBI permission to continue its investigation into the suicide of a 17-year-old girl in Thanjavur who was reportedly forced to convert to Christianity. The appeal filed by the Tamil Nadu DGP contesting the Madras High Court ruling was given notice by a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Bela M Trivedi.

The top court stated that there are two elements to the case: one, some observations recorded in the challenged judgement, and the second, the final order instructing the CBI to conduct an investigation.

The Supreme Court stated that while it may not be suitable for it to intervene in the CBI inquiry, it would provide notice on the first point. "Three weeks to return the issue notice... The investigation into the assailed order will continue in the meanwhile," the bench stated. Tamil Nadu was represented by senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi.

The investigation was handed over to the CBI by the high court on January 31.

"It is the responsibility of this Court to provide posthumous justice to the child." When all of the above situations are considered together, it is clear that the investigation is not moving in the proper direction.
