Amritsar: The Supreme Court has warned the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab after 57 people died due to spurious liquor in Bihar. On the sale of illicit liquor in Punjab, the top court said that "when there is a fire in the house, do not do the work of digging a well." The Punjab government on Thursday told the Supreme Court that country-made liquor with 40 percent alcohol will be introduced as a "healthy alternative" to illegal home-made liquor. The Punjab government told the court that it will be sold in pouches, especially in rural areas. This is part of the Punjab government's new excise policy.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab told the court that efforts are being made to prevent a Bihar-like tragedy in areas where illegal and poisonous liquor is sold. The Punjab government said discussions have been held with the distillery to make these liquor-laden pouches. A bench of Justices MR Shah and CT Ravikumar of the apex court were told by the Punjab government that steps have been taken by the government in this direction. Local police in the areas where illegal distilleries will be found will be held responsible. At the same time, the petitioner told the court that the government is only taking action on small people, and those making and selling illegal liquor are left.

Citing an example in the Supreme Court, the petitioner said the state government had recently admitted to arresting a man with 60 liters of illicit liquor. The petitioner further said that in this case, the government did not try to find out where this liquor was made and by whom. Who paid for where these wines are made because these furnaces require huge capital to build?
