The capital city of Odisha, Bhubaneswar, has earned the Open Defecation Free (ODF) ++ status after a third-party verification, informed the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Sunday.

One of the key indicators of the Swachh Bharat Mission is the ODF++ status. ODF+ and ODF++ are aimed towards proper maintenance of toilet facilities and safe collection, conveyance, treatment/disposal of all fecal sludge and sewage. While ODF+ focuses on toilets with water, maintenance and hygiene, ODF++ focuses on toilets with sludge and septage management.

The survey was conducted by the Quality Council of India (QCI) in various parts of the city on December 10 and 11 to review the sanitation and hygiene conditions.

The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation has complied with the requirements. Not only administrative work or infrastructure was perfect for this but the cooperation and sanitation behavior of the citizens played a key role in achieving the ODF++ status, said BMC Commissioner Prem Chandra Chaudhary.
