In Tamil Nadu, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika Rawat and 11 other jawans were killed in a helicopter accident near Coonoor last Wednesday. Giving this information, the Indian Air Force said, "CDS Rawat was on his way to address the students of Defence Staff College in Wellington. The Mi-17V5 helicopter had left Sulur for Wellington and was carrying 14 people including a crew member. On the other hand, the Indian Air Force also informed that "only Group Captain Varun Singh has survived the accident and is undergoing treatment at an Army Hospital in Wellington.''
Group Captain Varun Singh was awarded the 'Shaurya Chakra' on the occasion of Independence Day this year. He was given this honour to save his Tejas fighter aircraft during an emergency in 2020. The Air Force has written on its official Twitter handle, "With great regret, it has now been confirmed that General Bipin Rawat, Smt Madhulika Rawat and 11 others have died in the unfortunate accident.”
Air Force said that a Court of Inquiry has been ordered into the accident. President Ram Nath Kovind has condoled the incident. He tweeted, "The information about those who lost their lives in the accident is very sad for them. He wrote in his tweet, "I am shocked and saddened by the untimely death of General Bipin Rawat, his wife Madhulika. The country lost one of its brave sons. Four decades of selfless service to the motherland was full of his unique bravery and bravery.”
