DHAKA: After defeating the host nation Nepal 3-1 on Monday at the Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu, Bangladesh won their first SAFF Women's Championship thanks to a brace by Krishna Rani Sarkar and an early goal by Shamsunnahar junior.
Sabina Khatun, the captain of Bangladesh, was the tournament's top scorer with eight goals in five games. She dedicated the trophy to the people of Bangladesh.
"We won the Fairplay award, and I was given the prizes for best scorer and most valuable player. So, in addition to winning the title, it is a major accomplishment for me. This is, in my opinion, the happiest day of my life "stated Sabina.
"Our 12- to 13-year wait was over with the victory. It was amazing to see how the entire Bangladeshi population prayed for us. Last night, I even noticed a lot of people tagging me in comments on social media asking us to bring the trophy home. Therefore, the people of Bangladesh and the entire country are entitled to this prize "added Sabina.
The contestant with the most points in the end was Sabina. The 28-year-old forward, who scored eight goals in five games, was chosen as the competition's Most Valuable Player for her excellent performance.
"Bangladesh was awarded with the Fairplay prize. I was also awarded top scorer and most valuable player. Therefore, apart from winning the title, it represents a huge achievement for me. I believe that today is the best day of my life "Sabina said.
