New Delhi: On August 15, 2019, PM Narendra Modi announced the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) from the ramparts of the Red Fort. Under this mission, by 2024, there is a target of providing clean drinking water through pipes to every household in the country. Under this Jal Jeevan Mission, a big achievement has been achieved by providing tap water to more than 12 crore rural houses. At the time of the announcement of this mission, out of 19.27 crore households across the country, only 3.23 crore i.e. only 17 percent houses had water connections. But, even during the corona pandemic and the lockdown, the Modi government continued to work on the Jal Jeevan Mission and provided tap water to most of the rural households. Due to this, today more than 12 crore houses of the country are getting clean water from the tap.

Let us inform that, along with 5 states of the country, Goa, Telangana, Haryana, Gujarat and Punjab, 3 Union Territories Puducherry, Daman Diu, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, every house has come under tap water. Adequate, safe and regular tap water is being supplied to every household and public institution in every village of these states and union territories. 98.35% of Himachal Pradesh, 96.05% of Bihar are soon ready for full cover.

Due to the efforts of the Central and State Governments, tap water is reaching 9.06 lakh schools and 9.39 lakh Anganwadi centers in the country. At the time of the launch of the mission, tap water was available in only 21.64 lakh households in 112 aspirational districts of the country, which has now increased to 1.67 crore households. 3 aspirational districts from Telangana - Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Jaishankar Bhoopalpally and Bhadrabri Kothagudem, two districts of Gujarat - Dahod and Narmada, Moga and Firozpur in Punjab, Mewat in Haryana and 100% households in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh.
