US: After a successful convention that officially nominated him as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate, Donald Trump is set to resume his campaign trail. This Saturday, Trump will hold his first rally since narrowly escaping an assassination attempt, marking a significant return to the spotlight.
Trump’s rally will take place in Michigan, a key battleground state, where he will appear alongside his vice-presidential pick, J.D. Vance. This will be their first joint public appearance. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s campaign is facing turmoil, with increasing pressure from Democratic leaders and donors urging him to step down from the race. Biden, currently sidelined with Covid, is facing criticism from within his party. Many are concerned that his continued candidacy could lead to Democratic losses in the upcoming elections.
Trump’s campaign team is energized after a successful four-day Republican National Convention, where Trump solidified his control over the party and mobilized his base. Supporters were already gathering outside the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids by late Friday, eager to attend the rally scheduled for 5:00 pm (2100 GMT).
Trump will be speaking at the rally exactly one week after a dramatic incident in Pennsylvania, where a 20-year-old gunman fired shots at his rally, resulting in one fatality and injuring Trump. Reflecting on the incident, Trump remarked at the convention, “I had God on my side,” describing how he narrowly avoided injury. He added, “You'll never hear it from me a second time because it's actually too painful to tell.”
While Trump may choose not to delve into the specifics of the attack, he is expected to showcase his position as the Republican nominee and rally his supporters. His speech will likely include his usual critiques of the Biden administration on issues like immigration, inflation, crime, and foreign policy.
Security will be a major focus, especially following the recent attack and questions about Secret Service lapses. Trump’s rally will be held in a secure 12,000-capacity venue, providing better control over the event’s perimeter.
Trump’s appearance will also feature his new vice-presidential candidate, Vance, a 39-year-old senator from Ohio. Vance’s working-class background could help Trump appeal to key swing states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
In contrast, Biden’s campaign is struggling with multiple issues, including a poor debate performance and concerns about his age and health. With more than 30 House Democrats and four senators calling for Biden to withdraw, and notable figures like Barack Obama reportedly advising him to reconsider, Biden’s future in the race remains uncertain. Current polls suggest Trump is on track for a potential return to the White House.
