Amritsar: A group of construction workers and a Sikh activity clashed outside the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Thursday morning. The case is near the Akal Takht Secretariat when an attempt was being made to fill concrete in the underground tunnel-like structures received due to excavation work.

On July 2, the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) started the work of developing Jora Ghar (place for keeping shoes for devotees in the temple) and bale house (clock house) towards the entrance. The car service was handed over to Baba Kashmir Singh Bhuriwale. According to an Indian Express report, construction staff was digging the portal when two structures like tunnels made of Nanakshahi bricks were searched. Because of that, some heritage activities wanted those tunnels to be checked. But the SGPC did not stop the work.

After that, Sikh activist and bhajan singer Baldev Singh Wadala along with his supporters rushed to the spot and their supporters clashed with the construction workers. On the case, Wadala said, "We were only asking the SGPC to get these structures examined. These structures may belong to the time of Sikh gurus. But instead of checking, they wanted to cover them with concrete. Already, historical Gurudwara buildings within and outside Punjab have been greatly damaged by Kaar Sevak organizations. Instead of listening to us, we have been attacked.''
