Washington: Jay Knamsville Fire Battalion chief Ron Bomkamp said a duplex in Zanesville exploded Monday night after someone burned a cigarette near a natural gas leak. Two residents of the duplex in the 800 blocks of Hawthorne Avenue were taken to Merchewealth Hospital and Trauma Center in Janesville. One resident was seriously injured, Bomkamp said. While the other was moderately injured. A dog was also rescued from the duplex and taken to an emergency animal hospital.

He said the injured residents live in separate units. One unit suffered heavy damage and the other suffered smoke damage. He said that a resident had been smelling of gas near the water heater for several days and this is where the explosion occurred. Bomkamp said he did not know whether the smell was reported to the fire department before the explosion. Several neighbours at the scene said they felt their homes moving and heard a loud noise.

Germain Ayers said he felt trembling in his home and a TV and other objects fell in his house. When they looked outside, the conditions there were frightening. He said that they fled to the road after the explosion and before the fire department arrived. When they arrive at the duplex, Ayers sees a woman hiding under a mattress to protect herself. Ayers then took the woman out with the help of two other people. After this, the fire department reached the spot and started relief work.
