Mahashivratri is celebrated annually with much fervour and excitement across India. This year Mahashivratri will be observed on February 18, 2023. So, get ready to hear ‘Har Har Mahadev chants on this day.

While there is a Shivratri celebrated in every lunisolar month of the Hindu calendar, it is thought that the Mahashivratri only occurs once a year, in February or March, when winter ends and spring and summer arrive.

Mahashivratri, one of the 12 Shivratris held each year, is said to be particularly fortunate since it is believed to be the night of convergence of Shiva and Shakti, or, more generally, the masculine and feminine energies that maintain the balance of the world. Shiva and Shakti are adored as the personification of adoration, strength, and unity.

Shiva took the entire poison and held it in his throat rather than swallowing it to safeguard the entire planet from its wicked effects. As a result, his throat turned blue, earning him the name Neelakantha.

Mahashivratri is observed by all fifty states of the country, including Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh or Telangana.

Shiva worshippers fast for 24 hours, breaking it the next morning. In contrast to many other celebrations, Mahashivratri Puja is held at night.

During the fast, devotees eat satvik meals like ragi, sabudana, fruits, and vegetables.
