UP govt to launch portal for direct mineral purchases

LUCKNOW: Individuals, real estate companies, and government agencies in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow can now buy sand and river sand directly from stockists for monsoon construction projects.

From July of this year, the Mining Department portal 'Mine Mitra', that will be launched soon, will enable direct buying and selling. Because mining and excavation in river basins are halted during the monsoon, retail prices for sand and river sand skyrocket during this time.

According to a government spokesman, the department has already begun coordinating with collectors in two dozen districts where significant mining occurs to meet demand through the portal.

According to officials, 169 land parcels for storing river sand and 89 parcels for stockpiling sand have been identified.  Before the monsoon arrives, the miners fence a vacant land parcel from all sides.

From July to September, the minerals are excavated, transported, and stocked at the land parcel known colloquially as the "dump."  "We have already begun work to get such storage grounds fenced," said Mining Department Secretary Roshan Jacob. CCTV cameras will be installed, as well as a stock register. Our representatives will go to the dump to estimate the amount of stock.
