New Delhi: The Upper House of Parliament, the Rajya Sabha, has set a record in the business session. This was the 249th session of the Rajya Sabha which was adjourned for an indefinite time on Monday. In his traditional address before adjourning the Rajya Sabha indefinitely, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said that the biggest legislative business and most of the meetings in the last 17 years were held in this session. During the session, the House passed a bill to abolish Triple Talaq and division of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories.

Prime Minister Modi was also present in the House during his address to the Chairman. This was the first session of the Rajya Sabha after the Lok Sabha elections and during this period the General Budget for 2019-20, the Presidential Address's Thanksgiving Motion, the Three Divorce Bills, the Amendment to the RTI Act, the Resolution on elimination of most of the clauses in Article 370, the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, and the total number of 32 bills were passed. That is a record. While several new members took oath of office in the Session, the SP and several Congress members also resigned.

The members include Neeraj Shekhar of sp., Sanjay Seth and Surendra Nagar of the SP and sanjay Singh of the Congress and Bhuvneshwar Kalita. On Wednesday, the Upper House paid homage to former External Affairs Minister and former Rajya Sabha member Sushma Swaraj and recalled her contribution.
