Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh state government has mandated the installation of CCTV cameras in all school vehicles to bolster the safety of children, according to a circular released on December 29. The notification, issued by transport principal secretary L Venkateshwarlu, stipulates that this provision will be effective three months after its publication in the Gazette.

Although certain school vans had already adhered to the Uttar Pradesh Motor Vehicle rules by installing surveillance cameras, the new directive establishes specific deadlines for the installation of CCTV cameras in all school vans. Furthermore, the circular notes that similar cameras will eventually be required in all public transport vehicles once the proposed centralised Vehicle Location Tracking Center becomes operational. The state's transport department has already enlisted a private agency for the implementation of the Vehicle Location Tracking System (VLTS). This agency is authorized to deploy, integrate, test, and operationalize the vehicle tracking platform for tracking and monitoring vehicles under the designated framework.

The overarching project aims to connect all public transport vehicles, excluding two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and e-rickshaws, with vehicle location tracking devices. The real-time location of all such vehicles will be monitored by an integrated control and command center.
