The Hathras gang rape and murder incident has shaken the entire country after the 20-year old victim succumbed to death days after being brutally raped, assaulted, tortured, and strangled by four men. The girl reportedly suffered spinal injury, paralysis, and multiple fractures as the group of men assaulted her when she tried to resist. The incident was followed by an unprecedented cremation of the victim by Uttar Pradesh police at 2:30 am late in the night, which has intensified the anger amongst protesters and social activists. The family has alleged that the cremation was forceful, and they were not even allowed to see their daughter’s face.

Indian Human Rights Activist, Kundan Srivastava, who has been very vocal regarding the entire incident has urged the government and cops to be a lot more “sensitive and responsible” towards the victim and the family, and be more “aggressive” towards bringing justice to the family. Mr. Srivastava adds that he was “deeply angered and disturbed” by the forceful cremation of the victim’s body which compels him to question whether the cops were trying to hide something.

The incident has sparked several protests across the country with CM Yogi Adityanath’s effigies being burnt in different cities including Patna and Kolkata. The activists, lawyers, and opposition parties have been increasing the pressure on the government with protest rallies across Uttar Pradesh. Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra got detained two days before for a while during their march towards the victim’s village. The cops have lodged a police case against the Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Rahul Gandhi and more than 150 Congress workers. A 3-member Special Investigation team has been constituted by the Uttar Pradesh government who will be presenting a report in seven days.
