CHENNAI: Dalit political organisation Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) president and Chidambaram MP Thirumavalavan has pointed to the rise in cases of violence against Dalits in 2021, as per the data published by NCRB, and charged that the previous AIADMK government and its administrators aided violence against the Dalits.
Thol Thirumavalavan, the founder of VCK and a current member of parliament, claimed in a statement that the state police had been ineffective in pursuing those responsible for Dalit violence. He noted that, according to data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), attacks on Dalits increased in 2021.
The head of the VCK claimed that the AIADMK government before it was cruel in its response to those who assault Dalits and he urged Stalin to take stern action against those responsible for Dalit crimes. He claimed that 1,144 incidences of atrocities against Dalits were reported in Tamil Nadu in 2019, 1,274 were reported in 2020, and 1,377 were reported in 2021.
Thirumavalavan said that while Tamil Nadu was ranked fifth in the nation for attacks on the community in 2020, it is now placed seventh in 2021, with 53 Dalits dead and 61 others having their lives threatened.
He claimed that under the previous AIADMK government, a number of cases of Dalit atrocities went uninvestigated, and he urged Stalin to tell the police not to be careless in their inquiry.
Thirumavalavan further said that the primary cause of the attacks on Dalits was the police's attitude.
