Maharashtra violence erupts, curfew imposed for 4 days

Mumbai: Amidst the lockout allegedly called by the BJP in Maharashtra's Amravati city on Saturday, mobs pelted stones at various places and damaged shops, after which curfew has been issued in the city for four days, and internet services have been suspended. Where it is said that the lockout has been organized against rallies organized by Muslim organisations in Amravati city on Friday to protest against communal violence in Tripura. City police commissioner Aarti Singh has said that internet services in the city are going to remain closed for three days to prevent rumours from spreading. The curfew imposed earlier is going to continue for four days.

Hundreds of people took to the streets shouting slogans on Saturday morning in the Rajkamal Chowk area of the city in eastern Maharashtra, about 670 kilometres from Mumbai.  A large number of people had saffron flags in their hands. A police official said that some members of the mob pelted stones at shops in the Rajkamal Chowk area and some other places and damaged them. He also said that the police resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the protesters.

In the backdrop of a series of stone-pelting incidents on Friday and Saturday, the Acting Commissioner of Police Sandeep Patil has announced a curfew in the Amravati city area under Section 144 (1), (2), (3) of the CRPC (Code of Criminal Procedure). Barring medical emergencies, people are not allowed to leave their homes. Similarly, more than 5 people are not allowed to gather according to the order. The curfew is going to remain in force until further notice.
