New Delhi: Notification for 55 vacant seats of Rajya Sabha has been issued. Elections for these seats of the Upper House of Parliament will be held on 26 March. According to the election schedule announced by the Election Commission, 55 seats are getting vacant in 17 states of the Rajya Sabha. Voting on these seats will be held on March 26 and counting of votes will be done on the same day.

It is noteworthy that the tenure of 48 Rajya Sabha members from 17 states is coming up on 2 April, the term of five Rajya Sabha MPs from two states is ending on 3 April and the term of two MPs from Jharkhand is ending on 3 May. The last date for nomination for these Rajya Sabha seats has been set as March 13 and the nomination papers will be scrutinized on March 16. March 15 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Voting will be held on March 26 from 9 am to 4 pm and counting will take place at 5 pm.

The seats of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the late former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley have also vacated. After being elected as a Lok Sabha member, Amit Shah resigned from the membership of the Upper House. Along with this, the Rajya Sabha MPs whose tenure is ending include leaders like BJP leader RK Sinha, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh, JDU leader Kahakshan Parveen, Ramnath Thakur, BJP MP Prabhat Jha.
