The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued forecasts predicting varying weather conditions across several regions of the country. Today, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, and Lakshadweep are expected to experience rain, according to IMD's projections. IMD Chennai has specifically forecasted light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu. Similar weather patterns are expected over Puducherry and Karaikal until December 17.

Further updates from IMD Kerala indicate the likelihood of rain or thundershowers in scattered places across Kerala and Lakshadweep until December 17. In Thiruvananthapuram and nearby areas, a partly cloudy sky with intermittent rain or thundershowers is anticipated, with the minimum temperature hovering around 25°C until this morning.

The meteorological department has also issued warnings for hailstorms in isolated areas of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on December 12, and in Arunachal Pradesh on December 13.

Regarding fog alerts, IMD has cautioned about dense fog during morning hours in isolated pockets over Punjab on December 12 and 13, as well as in the North Eastern states of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura from December 12 to 14.

Looking at the winter season forecast, IMD anticipates warmer than usual winter months from December 2023 to February 2024 across most parts of India. However, normal to below-normal maximum temperatures have been projected for the central and northwest regions. Additionally, below-normal cold waves are expected in the north, northwest, central, east, and northeast parts of the country.

In Jammu and Kashmir, Srinagar experienced its coldest night of the season so far. The region continues to grapple with cold wave conditions as temperatures remained several degrees below freezing across the valley. Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a low of minus 4.8 degrees Celsius, slightly lower than the previous night's minus 4.4 degrees Celsius. The meteorological office predicts generally cloudy yet predominantly dry weather until December 16, with a further decrease in night temperatures expected in the coming days.
