New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a statement last Monday saying, "The latter half of the monsoon is likely to receive more than normal rainfall in August-September.'' In fact, IMD Director General Mrityunjay Mohapatra has predicted for August that the monsoon is likely to remain normal this month as well. He said parts of west Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Rajasthan, interior parts of Maharashtra, Jammu, and Kashmir, Ladakh, parts of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are likely to receive below-normal rainfall in August.
He also said, "Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, South Gujarat, North Eastern States, and Bihar may receive more than normal rainfall during this month.'' Mohapatra said at an online press conference last Monday "Rainfall is expected to be normal (95 to 10.5 percent of the long-term average) across the country during August to September 2021."
Let us also tell you that every year IMD issues forecast for the months of August-September of southwest monsoon which is the last two months of the four-month rainy season. Now this time, IMD has said, "Spatial distribution shows that many areas in the north, east and eastern parts of the country are likely to receive below-normal rainfall. Most parts of peninsular India and adjoining central India are likely to receive above normal to normal rainfall.'' In addition, it is being said, "The average rainfall in August across the country is likely to be normal (94 to 106 percent of LPA).''
