West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday met with Congress president Sonia Gandhi in Delhi in their first meeting since the two parties were contested as rivals in the Bengal election in April-May. The meeting is noteworthy amid opposition moves to join forces for a united fight in the 2024 national election. She said, “I am not a political astrologer. It depends on the situation, structure. I have no problem if someone else leads. When the matter is discussed we can decide. I cannot impose.” On the leadership issue, she said: “I want to help all the opposition parties to bell the cat. I don’t want to be a leader, but a simple cadre.”
On Tuesday, Banerjee had met Congress leaders Anand Sharma and Kamal Nath before meeting PM Narendra Modi. She said “I maintain good relations with most of the chief ministers, including AP CM Jagan Mohan Reddy, Odisha’s Naveen Patnaik, and Tamil Nadu CM Stalin She added: “After Parliament session, there will be talks, there should be a common platform to work together.”
