Vidisha: Farmers gathered on the National Highway at around 11 am on Thursday to announce a 4-day holiday in the agricultural produce market and the fall in paddy prices following reports of possible weather conditions worsening by the Met department on January 7, 8 and 9. The tehsildar and CSP who reached the spot explained to them and asked them to end the demonstration but the farmers are adamant.

Let me tell you that this is the second time this season that farmers have taken a toll on the National Highway, accusing the fall in paddy prices. Village Vignan farmer Chetan Singh Chauhan had said that the paddy which was being auctioned three days ago for Rs.2800 per quintal was being procured by the traders for Rs.2400 to Rs.2500 per quintal. That is what enraged the farmers.

The same farmers said that IMA has said that the weather has deteriorated for the next 3 to 4 days. Based on this prediction, the Krishi Upaj Mandi Samiti announced not to auction paddy in the mandi for 4 days. This is otherwise with us. The annadatas said that they had been staying in the mandi for 3 to 4 days to yield their produce. The Mandi Committee is not paying attention to the problems of the farmers.
