New Delhi: Voting for the new National President of Congress has been completed on Monday (October 17). After this election, for the first time in 22 years, the leadership of the Congress will go to someone outside the Gandhi family. However, whoever becomes the president of Congress, he will have to follow the instructions of the Gandhi family. This is to say of veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram. According to the media report, Chidambaram said 'No one is saying that the voice of the Gandhi family will be reduced, the new president will have to look into their views on the Congress Working Committee (CWC), Parliamentary Board and party forums.'

Former Home Minister P Chidambaram is among those in the Congress who spoke of the elections as a big step towards reforms. However, Chidambaram also denied that the Gandhi family controlled the Speaker remotely. He questioned that, 'Gandhi's allegation of remote controlling is an assumption. Do you think Gandhians will be able to dictate after the leaders are elected at the district level through elections?'

Chidambaram further said that the first task of the new Congress President would be to fix the entire organization, conduct elections and make a team. He said, 'The political temperature can be raised by a party. But, a proper party structure has to be in place and this can be done in 15 months.' This is the sixth real election in the 137-year-old party after independence. For much of its history, members of the Nehru-Gandhi family have been elected unopposed.
