New Delhi: When reports of the new variant of SARS-CoV-2 B.1.1529 surfaced in the media, many experts expected the World Health Organization (WHO) to name it the 'Nu' variant. The WHO next letter was 'NU', but after a panel meeting of the WHO on Friday, he named it 'Omicron' as a variant of concern, describing the new strain found in South Africa and Botswana as 'variant of concern'.

Naming the new variant of corona, WHO left two letters Nu and Xi. But why? The reason for this is not clear. However, Epidemiologist Martin Culdorf, a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, explained a possible reason behind it. On Twitter, he said that WHO left the alphabet and named the new variant 'Omicron' so that no variant of the Corona virus could be called 'XI'.
In fact, it could have been a strange situation for the whole world if the new Corona virus variant had been named Xi, because the name would have been linked to Chinese President Xi Jinping. That too at a time when the whole world is blaming China for the origin of the original virus. However, the variant was not even named Nu in the meantime. With a picture of the Greek alphabet, Martin Culdorf tweeted that there were reports of it being called Nu variant, but WHO called it 'Omicron' because he wanted to avoid Xi.
