Kottayam: On Valentine's Day, a wife in Kottayam, Kerala has set an example of true love by donating a liver to her husband. This is the second time that a liver transplant has been done at a government hospital in the state. The incident took place at Velur Kottapadi in Kunnamkulam. Here, 39-year-old Pravija has donated liver to her husband Subish (43). According to reports, the surgery was started at Kottayam Medical College at 6 am on Monday. And lasted about 17 hours. Due to this surgery, about 40 per cent of Pravija's liver was first removed. Subish's liver was also removed in parallel. The first phase of the surgery was completed at 5 pm.

Then, at 5.30 p.m., the transplant of the liver portion of Pravija on Subish's body was started. The operation was completed five hours later. The operation was successful by a team of 29 other doctors led by Dr. R.S. Sindhu with the help of 9 technicians. After the operation, Subish was shifted to the ICU. According to MCH Superintendent Dr TK Jayakumar, the surgery was completed by 10.30 pm and Subeesh has been put on a ventilator after an hour's observation. However, the next 48 hours are extremely important for Subeesh.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George said, "''This is a big milestone in the field of organ transplant surgery in Kerala.'' Earlier last year, a 14-year-old man, who was seriously ill due to liver failure in Badaun, UP, was saved by his two elder sisters by giving half of his liver. The successful operation was carried out at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. The 14-year-old Akshat weighed 93 kg, had a stomach full of water and was swollen. On August 12, 2021, Dr Arvind Singh, chairman of the liver transplant department of Medanta Hospital, Dr Neelam Mohan, along with his team, performed the surgery, which lasted for about 15 hours. In this, Akshat's two elder sisters, Prerna (22) and Neha (29), gave half of their liver to save their brother's life.
