South Sudan: In food-insecure South Sudan, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has established the first-ever innovative programme to support locally-driven solutions to food system concerns. WFP country representative Matthew Hollingworth said on Friday that the organisation is focusing on South Sudanese entrepreneurs to develop innovative ideas with the help of the WFP IGNITE Innovation Hub for Eastern Africa, which aims to provide solutions to improve food security.

According to statistics, some 760,000 South Sudanese have been hit by floods that have wreaked devastation across the country. According to a recent assessment released by the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Food Programme (WFP), South Sudan's cereal production deficit is expected to reach an all-time high of 465,600 tonnes in 2021.

With assistance from the United Nations Development Programme, the IGNITE Food Systems Challenge will release a call for submissions on November 19th. The application will be posted at vc4a.com, and applications will be accepted until December 15. "Start-ups with ideas that address hunger, improve food security, or build regional food systems are encouraged to apply. Selected businesses will receive technical assistance, training, and mentoring, as well as the chance to obtain grant financing of up to USD100,000 "according to a statement released by the World Food Programme (WFP).
