Surat: Yusuf Pathan, recently elected as the Lok Sabha MP from Baharampur, West Bengal on a Trinamool Congress ticket, has been served a notice by the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), ruled by the BJP, for allegedly encroaching upon a civic body-owned land.

Former Bharatiya Janata Party corporator Vijay Pawar lodged a complaint alleging that Yusuf Pathan has unlawfully occupied government-owned land in Vadodara. He submitted the complaint in writing to the Chairman of the Standing Committee, urging the corporation to take possession of the land.

The notice dispatched by VMC to Yusuf Pathan on June 6 highlighted the issue, stating that the corporation had previously received an application from Pathan in March 2012 for allotment of a land measuring 978 square meters in TP Scheme Number 22 and Final Plot Number 90. However, the request was rejected by the state government in June 2014. Despite the rejection, Pathan is alleged to have encroached upon the land, prompting the VMC to direct him to clear the encroachment immediately.

The disputed land is located near the Shubham Party plot in Tandalja, Vadodara, where Pathan intended to construct a bungalow on plot number 91. He sought allotment of plot number 90 from VMC for this purpose. A proposal was formulated based on the Municipal Commissioner’s recommendation, proposing to allot the land to Pathan for residential purposes.

The proposal was approved by the Municipal Standing Committee and subsequently forwarded to the General Assembly for approval. However, the request was rejected by the State Government in June 2014. Despite this, Pathan allegedly walled the compound to build a garden and stables on the land.

Vijay Pawar, the former corporator, filed a complaint with the standing committee chairman, asserting that the land should be reclaimed by VMC. He questioned how Pathan could occupy the land without government authorization and urged appropriate action in the matter.

The Standing Committee Chairperson, Dr. Sheetal Mistry, informed that action against Pathan could be initiated after two weeks, as Pathan was given a two-week deadline to clear the encroachment. Mistry denied allegations of political motives behind the action, stating that it was a standard procedure upon discovery of encroachment.
