Recently the news has come that Tamilnadu chief minister J Jayalalitha banned 500 alcohol shops in the state just at the first day of her forth tenure. Apart from that alcohol was also banned in Bihar recently. Alcohol is also banned in some other states of the country. This step is appreciable and noble. But there is still the question that only closing liquor shops and banning liquor shops would bring change or some other efforts are required?

Statistics show that about 30% Indian population consume liquor on daily basis ,out of which about 11% are binge drinkers. The question is that how will you stop these 11% binje drinkers? Should there be any rehabilitation provisions for them? These efforts will also increase illegal distribution of alcohol. It will lead to corruption. Also there are some states where it is not prohibited.

If we talk about Gujarat liquor is ban here for years. But as you crosses the border of Gujrat there is heavy consumption of liquor, also smuggling and illicit sale of alcohol is very common.

Apart from that governments also generate heavy revenues from alcohol production and distribution. So many states are indifferent towards such bans. Maharashtra the most alcohol consumption state in India earns around 20,000 crore revenue from liquor sector.

Also India is a democratic country. It is govern by representative of public. We Indians are provided with various freedoms. We do not like interference in our lives. Like the beef controversy where many people believes that their food habits should not be questioned, here also many will state that sensible enough to understand what should be consumed and what not. In short interfering individual lives is difficult in India.

So the point is that a overall long-term visionary plan should be made to practically cop up with this issue. The first thing to be done is to create a positive environment in country by using various ways. Hasty or attractive decisions should not be taken just for political or personal benefits. There should be real willpower to do so.People should be encourage and motivate to leave the liquor consumption, individual and family counseling can be done. Only statutory warning will not work. Research show that more than 70% people do not pay attention on such statutory warnings. There should be some practical approach towards it. This ban should be performed on country level.

Political indifference is the biggest drawback in our governing system. The collective efforts of all the parties can only make it possible to achieve the results.

Also If complete ban is not possible, strict and clear regulations can be formulate regarding production, sell and consumption of alcohol. The productive results can also be achieved through collective and practical approaches.
