Giridih: 4 children lost their lives when they drowned at Chhath Ghat of Usri river in Giridih district on Tuesday. After this accident, mourning has spread to 4 houses. The deceased include Ajay Sharma's daughter Diksha Kumari (6 years), Pinku Singh's photo Sonakshi Kumari (7 years), Madan Singh's daughter Suhana Kumari (9 years) Mahesh Singh's son Munna Kumar (10 years). The incident took place on an Usri river at Mangarodih in Sadar block.

Family members of the same children said that the four children had gone to Chhath Ghat on the river, 200 feet away from home, to prepare for Chhath Puja with their mother. The mother was preparing for the puja. This made the children busy playing. The mother washed her clothes and returned and the children remained there. Local residents said that even after an hour when the children did not return home, people started looking for them. The residents then went to the river ghat to search for the children.

They saw the body of a child floating in the water. Then, when a search was made, all the children were found dead there. Thereafter, one by one, the children were taken out of the river. Locals said there is a 10 feet deep cavity in the river. The children could not guess it and everyone got involved in it. The local administration rushed to the spot after receiving the report of the same incident. But they faced opposition from locals. People were outraged and said that when the dam was constructed, why was the barricading not done in the deep area? Why was there no attempt to stop the children from going there?
