8-year-old boy drowns in municipal pool on his first day

Mumbai: An eight-year-old boy who drowned at a swimming pool owned by the civic body on Sunday  at Krishna Township in Vasai West.  Negligence on the part of staffers at the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation swimming pool complex led to the untimely demise of the boy.

Axccording to the report, a student of class 3, Yug Ladhwa had appeared for his last exam on Friday and enrolled himself for the municipal swimming pool complex at Krishna Township in Vasai West. The first day of his summer vacation, Sunday was also Yug's first day at the swimming pool.

 Yug's parents in police complaint claimed that they dropped off their son at the pool at around 6.30 pm and were told to pick him up an hour later. The parents also stated that they were asked to leave despite their request to stay back and look after their son during his swimming lesson. We returned around 7.15 pm to collect our son bu he was nowhere to be seen, alleged the parents. When confronted, coach Rahul Toke told the parents that Yug already left the pool and must be on his way home. However, the boy's parents launched an intensive search of the swimming pool premises and the area around it. When they returned to the pool, they saw Yug lying on the ground with staffers attempting to revive him. The boy was rushed to the Golden Park hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Post-incident, the boy's parents filed an official police complaint against the pool staff, accusing them of negligence. There was no lifeguard despite them charging us Rs 50 as a daily fee, claimed the parents.

Police have booked coach Rahul Toke, contractor Balkrishna Sharma and two others on charges of causing death by negligence under section 304 (a) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
