In a shocking incident, a Muslim man accused of selling beef was forcibly made to eat pork in Assam. Reports suggest the police have detained at least five people after a viral video showed the man on his knees in deep slush, begging to let him go. The mob suspected 68-year-old Shaukat Ali of selling beef and cornered him. They thrashed him and also proceeded to force feed him pork. The incident took place on April 7 in Assam's Biswanath Chariali town. According to reports, the crowd also questioned if he was Bangladeshi and if his name was in the National Register of Citizens (NRC). In a video doing the rounds on social media, Ali is seen kneeling down in slush, surrounded by an irate mob, which demands to know why he was selling beef. “Do you have a license to sell beef?” the mob can be heard asking in the video.

According to local police, Ali is a businessman and has been running an eatery in the area for the last 35 years. The mob accused him of selling beef in the weekly market. Police have filed two separate First Information Reports (FIR) and have started investigations to nab the accused. Shaukat Ali, 68, was beaten on the road and forced to eat pork as punishment by locals, say sources. He is currently being treated at a government hospital.

AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi also slammed the incident on Twitter, writing "I know many people who feel they're desensitized because of the number of lynchings in the last five years. I am not, each video infuriates me and saddens me." "Not that one needs to say this, but reminding @sarbanandsonwal that he’s taken an oath on something called the Constitution of India. He’s obliged to protect the lives of everyone who lives in Assam," Owaisi added in another tweet attacking the Assam Chief Minister.
