Concerns over the intellectual property of artificial intelligence-generated works led to the removal from streaming sites of an AI-generated song that resembled Canadian musicians Drake and The Weeknd. Yet, it received millions of listens prior to being taken down. A few days ago, a tune produced by artificial intelligence and featuring imitations of Drake and The Weeknd's voices went viral on social media. The song has been removed by Universal Music Group after it became viral on social media and streaming services. According to reports, the AI-generated song Heart on My Sleeve alludes to the singer of "Blinding Lightsinfatuation "'s with Selena Gomez.
The Weeknd's relationship with Selena Gomez is mentioned in the AI-generated song created by Ghostwriter977 on TikTok, which also includes Metro Boomin's infamous "If Metro don't trust you, I'mma shoot ya" producer tag. Above the bass-heavy music, Drake and The Weeknd's Artificial voices could then be heard. Heart on my Sleeve was previously accessible on a number of streaming services, including Tidal, Apple Music, and Spotify.
UMG has asked streaming services like Spotify to forbid AI firms from using its music to train their algorithms. A UMG official said in a statement that "we have a moral and financial duty to our artists to fight to prevent the unauthorized use of their music and to stop platforms from absorbing content that violates the rights of artists and other creators."
The BBC received a statement from Universal Music Group in response to the AI-generated track that uses the voices of Drake and The Weeknd, stating that "The training of generative AI using our artists' music (which represents both a breach of our agreements and a violation of copyright law) as well as the availability of infringing content created with generative AI on DSPs [digital service providers] begs the question as to which side of history all stand on."
