Lucknow: Following a significant victory in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav is set to vacate his position as Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly to concentrate on national politics. In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the SP secured 37 seats in UP. Subsequently, Akhilesh Yadav convened a meeting with the victorious MPs at the party headquarters in Lucknow to discuss his future plans.

Sources suggest that Akhilesh Yadav may step down from his Karhal assembly seat (Mainpuri) to focus on central politics. The Samajwadi Party has achieved its best performance in the Lok Sabha elections to date. Following Akhilesh's departure, Tej Pratap Yadav is expected to be a strong contender for the Karhal seat. Tej Pratap, who has previously campaigned in Mainpuri alongside Mulayam Singh and in the recent election with Dimple Yadav, is a former MP from Mainpuri.

On Saturday, a strategy meeting was held at the party headquarters to outline how the new MPs will effectively act as a strong opposition in their respective constituencies and address public issues from the local level to the Parliament. The meeting also discussed Akhilesh Yadav's representation in the Lok Sabha, as he has won the election from the Kannauj seat.

During the meeting, Akhilesh Yadav expressed his gratitude to the MPs, stating, "I met all the winning MPs of the Samajwadi Party. Everyone worked tirelessly in this scorching heat, while in the Bharatiya Janata Party government, there were two types of MPs: those who received the MP's certificate and those who did not. I congratulate everyone."

Speculations on the New Leader of the Opposition

With Akhilesh Yadav transitioning to national politics, the key question remains: who will assume the role of Leader of the Opposition in Uttar Pradesh? There is speculation that Shivpal Yadav, being the senior-most member of the legislative party, could be appointed to this position. However, the final decision will be made by Akhilesh Yadav.

This shift marks a significant moment for the Samajwadi Party as it aims to strengthen its influence both in state and national politics.
