Prayagraj: The Allahabad High Court has ordered the Director-General of Police, Uttar Pradesh, to appear in person because of the department's officers' "reckless approach" to the court's directives.

In response to a contempt petition filed by one Alok Kumar, a bench of Justice Saral Srivastava has ordered UP DGP Mukul Goel to appear personally before the High Court on April 21.

In 2018, Alok Kumar filed a contempt petition with the court, alleging that the UP Police Department neglected to evaluate the application of applicant/Alok Kumar for compassionate appointment in accordance with applicable laws, in breach of the court's December 2017 ruling.

The applicant also claimed that despite the fact that he was entitled to a compassionate appointment, which had been confirmed by the opposing party - in this case, the police - he had not received an appointment letter.

The High Court had ordered Rakesh Shanker, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Establishment), U.P. Police Headquarters, to appear in person on April 4 to show cause why he should not face charges for failing to comply with the court's order.

Shanker had retired on March 31 of last year, according to the court, and no officer had been assigned to the position by the state government. It also expressed dissatisfaction with the state for failing to file an affidavit notifying the court that the officer had retired.
