Lucknow: On March 18th, a disturbing incident unfolded in the Sherwadeeh village of Uttar Pradesh's Basti district, where a Muslim man named Qasim allegedly set fire to the residence of a Hindu family after a child accidentally hit him with a ball while playing. As a result of this arson attack, three bovine animals housed in the victim's thatched house sustained injuries and are presently receiving medical treatment at an animal hospital. Fortunately, the family members managed to escape the flames and save their lives.
The incident occurred in an area under the jurisdiction of the Harraiya police station, where Sherwadeeh village is predominantly inhabited by Muslim families, with only three Hindu households. Rajbali Chauhan, the grandfather of the child involved, claimed that a few days prior, his 8-year-old grandson's ball had struck Qasim's foot during play. Qasim not only complained about the child to his family but also issued threats to the family members. When the child's father protested against this behavior, Qasim allegedly threatened to burn the entire family alive.
Late in the night on March 18th, Qasim reportedly poured inflammable material on the house and set it ablaze while the family slept inside. Despite the rapid spread of the fire, the family members managed to escape, but three cows tied up in a shelter suffered injuries in the blaze and are currently receiving veterinary care.
Following the incident, Rajbali Chauhan lodged a complaint with the authorities, but no action was taken initially. In response, members of a Hindu organization staged a protest inside the police station, prompting the police to finally file a First Information Report (FIR) against two individuals, including Qasim. However, Qasim was released by the police after being issued a challan for minor offenses.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Ashok Kumar Mishra refuted the allegations of police inaction, stating that an FIR had been filed against Qasim, who is the primary accused in the case. Mishra clarified that the investigation is ongoing and emphasized that the injured cattle are receiving medical treatment.
