Arun Jaitley Passes away: Here's how was his political journey

NEW DELHI: Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who was counted among the hardliner leaders of the BJP, passed away at the age of 66. He had been sick for a long time. Jaitley's stature can be understood from the fact that he was considered a problem solver during the Modi government's first term. Their friendship was with the parties. He was said to have well-wishers in each of his parties. Arun Jaitley also had good relations with the media. He was Finance Minister and Defence Minister during the first term of the Modi government. It was during his Finance Minister's time that the general budget and the Railway Budget were put together in the country.

GST was also introduced during his tenure. Arun Jaitley was born on December 28, 1952, at the home of Maharaj Kishan Jaitley and Ratan Prabha Jaitley in Delhi. His father was also a lawyer. His schooling was completed from St. Xavier's School, New Delhi, in 1957-69. Graduated in Commerce from Sriram College of Commerce, New Delhi in 1973. In 1977, he obtained a law degree from the Faculty of Law of Delhi University. In 1974, he was also the President of the Students' Association of Delhi University. On May 24, 1982, she was married to Sangeeta Jaitley. They have two children, son Rohan and daughter Sonali.

His political starts from 1991 when Jaitley was nominated as a member of the BJP's National Executive. He became the BJP spokesperson during the period before the 1999 general election. In 1999, he was appointed Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting (Independent Charge) in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. On July 23, 2000, after Ram Jethmalani's resignation, Jaitley received the additional charge from the Ministry of Law, Justice and Company Affairs. He also became president of the All India Students' Council (ABVP) Students' Association of Delhi University in 1974. During the Emergency for 19 months in 1975-77, they were mesiling and then joined the Jan Sangh. As a lawyer, he had also practised in the Supreme Court and various High Courts in the country since 1977. In 1989, Jaitley was appointed Additional Advocate General by the Vishwanath Pratap Singh Government. In the 2014 general elections, he contested from Amritsar Lok Sabha seat and lost to Amarinder Singh (Congress candidate).

Apart from all this, Jaitley was one of the most famous lawyers in the country. He has practised in the Supreme Court and in several states of the country. In 1990, the Delhi High Court nominated him as a Senior Advocate.
