NEW DELHI: Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has passed away at Delhi's AIIMS Hospital today. He was ill for a long time and today, on Saturday, 66-year-old Jaitley breathed his last. Since Arun Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi on August 9 due to shortness of breath, his health had been deteriorating. Arun Jaitley, a fearless politician throughout his life, had also vocally opposed Indira Gandhi during the Emergency.
He became the first Satyagrahis to protest against the strict move of former PM Indira Gandhi. He was sent to jail on June 26, 1975. On the middle of June 25-26, 1975, several top Opposition leaders were arrested, with Jaitley being named at the forefront. He led the Delhi University students' demonstration against Indira Gandhi's move and lit the statue of Emergency and made a powerful speech to the people against what was happening there.
During the demonstration, he was arrested and lodged in Delhi's Tihar Jail. Thus, Jaitley had the distinction of holding the sole protest on the morning of June 26, 1975, thus becoming a Satyagrahis against the Emergency. In his words, he has said about the situation, saying, 'I never felt like I was getting involved in those events at the age of 22.' This event changed the future of my life. '
