An assistant public prosecutor working in the sessions court in Petlad town of Anand district was caught by the Anti-Corruption Bureau accepting a bribe on Monday.

The Bureau had laid a trap after receiving a tip-off from the complainant in the case and nabbed the assistant public prosecutor accepting Rs 35,000 in cash as a bribe. The accused, assistant public prosecutor Yagnesh Thacker, had demanded money from the unnamed complainant for dropping a prosecution case against him.

According to the case details, an offence had been filed against the complainant in the Petlad police station case in 2017. Trial in the case was held in Petlad session court, which acquitted him in an order delivered on January 13, 2021. A top official from ACB said the complainant was involved in an atrocity case filed against him by his wife.

According to an ACB release, an FIR was lodged against the complainant at Petlad town police station in 2017. In the final hearing of the case, the Petlad sessions court acquitted him on January 13, the release said.

Thakar had allegedly demanded Rs 80,000 from the complainant for not challenging the sessions court's order in the High Court and for giving a ''favorable opinion'' about the complainant, the official said.

The complainant was asked to pay Rs 40,000 in advance and the remaining sum after the state government clears its stand about not filing an appeal in the High Court, he said.
