The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state unit had suggested 3 names on its behalf for the Rajya Sabha elections in the past which included the names of Prakash Shetty, Prabhakar Kore and Ramesh Katti, but the high command ignored these names and unexpectedly 2 new faces were cast in the election riot. Among the names suggested by the BJP's state unit, Prabhakar Shetty was a businessman, while Prabhakar Kore is a current Rajya Sabha member. While Ramesh Katti is brother of sitting MLA Umesh Katti.

There were speculations that two (Prabhakar Kore and Prakash Shetty) tickets could be given out of the 3 names suggested by the Karnataka BJP unit. Elections are proposed on 4 Rajya Sabha seats in Karnataka. Talking about the strength, Congress can easily get 1 seat. Whereas BJP can have 2 seats. There is every hope of a tough fight in the fourth seat, but if JDS and Congress bet on the same candidate, then this seat can also go to their account.
