KOLKATA: A Calcutta High Court single-judge panel on Monday denied bail to 13 people accused of violence in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas area following the 2021 Assembly elections.

Because the CBI is investigating the case, Justice Debangsu Basak stated that giving bail to the 13 defendants could impact the investigation's operations.

Justice Basak also pointed out that there is no indication that the defendants were not involved in the crime as of yet.  A lower court had already granted bail to the 13 accused.

However, the CBI contested the order before Justice Basak's panel, which decided after a thorough hearing that the 13 accused could not be freed on bail under any circumstances.

From the day the Trinamool Congress won a landslide win in May last year, distinct pockets of West Bengal were shaken by violence.

The BJP and various people filed court suits in the Calcutta High Court demanding a CBI investigation into various post-election violence incidents in West Bengal, which contained charges such as murder and rape.

Last year, teams from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) were also dispatched to West Bengal to investigate the charges.
