NEW DELHI: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully entered the first orbit of the moon on Chandrayaan-2 on Tuesday. ISRO scientists entered Chandrayaan-2 in the first orbit of the moon between 8.30 a.m. and 9.30 a.m. Now Chandrayaan-2, 118 km of apogee (short distance from the moon) and a periji of 18078 km (distance over the moon) will orbit for the next 24 hours.

During this period, Chandrayaan's speed has been reduced from 10.98 km per second to about 1.98 km per second. Chandrayaan-2 has been reduced by 90 per cent so that the vehicle does not hit the moon under the influence of the moon's gravitational force. The entry of Chandrayaan-2 into the first orbit of the moon on August 20 was like a fire test for ISRO scientists. However, our scientists concluded it with great efficiency and accuracy.

On September 7, Chandrayaan-2 will land at the south pole of the moon. Chandrayaan-2 was launched on July 22 from Sriharikota launch center via rocket Baahubali. Earlier on August 14, Chandrayaan-2 was inserted into the Trans Lunar Orbit. On September 7, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to see a live landing of Chandrayaan-2 at the south pole of the moon.
