Bangalore: Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar may soon become the president of the Karnataka Congress unit. It can be announced after January 12. Congress high command believes that they have the resources to strengthen the party in the state. Recently DK Shivkumar was arrested in a money laundering case. He is currently out on bail.

Shivkumar has been on target of Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate (ED) since demonetization in the year 2016. In 2017, when the Income Tax Department searched his New Delhi flat, Rs 8.59 crore cash was recovered from there, which was seized by the department. The Income Tax Department registered cases against him and 4 of his associates under Sections 277 and 278 of the Income Tax Act and sections 120 (b), 193 and 199 of the Indian Penal Code.

The results of the by-elections in 15 assembly seats of Karnataka came. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 12 seats, while the Congress was able to win only 2 seats. On this performance of the Congress, State President Dinesh Gundu Rao and Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah resigned. Since then the post of Congress President was vacant here. It is now believed that DK Shivakumar may be appointed as the president. Shivkumar is considered very close to the interim president of the party, Sonia Gandhi.
