Patna: As the Lok Sabha elections draw nearer, the Congress party gears up to contest on approximately 10 to 12 seats out of Bihar's total 40. The party has earmarked specific constituencies where it intends to field candidates. However, the final decision rests upon discussions with Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav during their upcoming seat-sharing deliberations within the INDIA alliance framework. While Congress has laid claim to 12 seats, the exact number and constituencies will be determined by Nitish and Lalu.

The Congress party has been proactive in the seat-sharing discussions, especially in the Hindi heartland states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Reports from India Today suggest that Congress is eyeing around 50 seats across these states. In Bihar alone, they have set their sights on key constituencies such as Patna, Kishanganj, Aurangabad, Bhagalpur, and others.

An essential meeting convened by the Congress high command took place in Delhi recently. Alongside discussions on Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Nyay Yatra, the focal point was the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Bihar Congress President Akhilesh Prasad Singh was among the attendees, hinting at potential deliberations on Bihar's seat allocation.

However, the seat-sharing dynamics within the INDIA alliance remain unresolved. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been advocating for a swift decision on the matter and had previously voiced his concerns about Congress's delays. With Nitish now at the helm of JDU, in conjunction with Lalu Yadav's RJD, the seat-sharing equation is intricate, especially when considering the inclusion of left parties in the alliance. Contested seats like Buxar, Aurangabad, and Katihar might see intense negotiations among alliance partners.

Reflecting on the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress had contested nine seats under the Grand Alliance banner, clinching victory in Kishanganj. Notably, JDU and left parties were not part of this alliance. As the electoral landscape evolves, Congress aims to maintain or even surpass its previous seat count. Yet, with JDU and the left joining forces with Congress and RJD for the 2024 elections, the final distribution of seats hinges on the negotiations between Nitish and Lalu. Only time will reveal the outcome of Congress's aspiration to contest a significant number of seats in Bihar.
