NEW DELHI: Minister of Civil Aviation, Jyotiraditya Scindia inaugurated a direct flight between Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, and Kolkata, West Bengal, on Friday.

Spicejet flights will be operating daily baisis and deploy its Q400,78-seater turboprop aircraft designed for shorter distance flights on the route. SpiceJet is launching 26 new domestic flights on Friday, including this new route.

Civil Aviation minister stated on the occasion that there has been a significant expansion in the country's air services in the previous year, particularly in Madhya Pradesh, where there were 554 aircraft movements per week in July 2021 and the figure has now increased to 980. He went on to say that Jabalpur is now connected to ten cities and that aircraft movement has increased to 182.

Similarly, Gwalior was connected to four cities with 56 aircraft movements in July 2021, and that number has since increased to 100. Indore's aircraft movement has increased from 308 to 468, connecting it to 20 locations. Bhopal, the state capital, currently has aviation linkages with 13 locations and 226 aircraft movements, up from 5 in July 2021.

There are four flights per week between Khajuraho and Delhi. Jabalpur airport was established in 1930 and was used during WWII. The airport is currently being expanded, with the runway length increasing from 1,988 to 2,750 metres, Scindia said.
