PANAJI: The election for post of Deputy Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly will be held on Friday, July 21.

Joshua De Souza, a BJP MLA, will be contesting against Delilah Lobo, a candidate for the Congress.
Legislative assembly member  Delilah Lobo is the wife of Calangute MLA Michael Lobo, against whom Congress has initiated action for "anti-party activities" and has expelled him from the post of Leader of Opposition.

Prior to that date, Assembly Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar withdrew the notification for the election amid rumours that some Congress MLAs would be joining the BJP. The election for the position of Deputy Speaker had originally been set for July 12.

After BJP MLA Subhash Phal Dessai resigned from the position prior to the April cabinet expansion, the position of Deputy Speaker became vacant. Social Welfare Minister Phal Dessai is in office right now.
The BJP has 20 MLAs in the 40-member Legislative Assembly, and it also has the support of two MGP MLAs and three independent lawmakers. However, there are 11 MLAs in the House of Congress.
